The formation of the UK Forum for Genetics and Insurance was announced following a meeting of interested parties hosted at the Staple Inn by the Faculty & Institute of Actuaries on 27 November 1998.

The initiative to establish a Forum stemmed from the report of the Human Genetics Advisory Committee (HGAC), published in December 1997, entitled Implications of Genetic Testing for Insurance. This report called for increased collaboration between geneticists, doctors, medical researchers, actuaries and others working in this exceptionally complex area with all its medical, social, financial and ethical implications.
